Happy Birthday Pitve Tunnel: Opening Day Pictures from 1963

Some great pictures of the opening of one of Hvar’s coolest experiences – welcome to the Pitve Tunnel in 1963. 

The Total Hvar inbox is getting more international, but the last thing I expect to receive in a message from Cardiff were these great pictures of the Pitve Tunnel.

Taken in 1963 at the official opening, that would indicate that the tunnel is 50 years old this year, and it has played a very important part in the development of southern resorts such as Zavala, Ivan Dolac and Sveta Nedjelja. 

Could this indeed be a picture of the very first car to pass through the Pitve Tunnel? 

For those of you who have not experienced the unique magic of the tunnel, fasten your armchair seatbelts and take a ride in the video below. 

The latest chapter in the tunnel’s history is that it will be temporarily closed next month, as work starts to improve the interior of the tunnel.
