Lovely snapshot from the 1960s/1970s and a look at the joys of ferry travel with the Dalmatian Mercedes – the donkey.
Hvar, of course, had its very own donkey called Mercedes, who inspired the title of my last book, Lavender, Dormice and a Donkey Named Mercedes.
Mercedes, of course, spent most of her life as a rakija-swilling donkey on the small island of Galesnik in front of Hvar Town, a somewhat lonely existence given that she was the only permanent resident and there was no other donkey company.
Until… a Brit working in one of the hostels in Hvar Town decided to highlight the perils of donkey boat travel.
Mercedes enjoyed a few glorious months with her new friend, so much so that he apparently exhausted her, and she passed away several months later.
