One of the more encouraging trends in Hvar tourism in recent years has been the gradual extending of seasonal flights.
The peak season months sell themselves of course, but tourists wanting to experience Hvar in the shoulder months now have a little more affordable choice for flights in April, May, September and October.
One of the most fascinating times to visit the island is Easter, a festival of great religious importance for locals, as well as time for extended family to come together and celebrate. The Easter weekend is also a cultural highlight with the annual religious processions, including Za Krizen, the UNESCO intangible heritage which has taken place each year for over 500 years in Jelsa, Pitve, Svirce, Vrisnik, Vrbanj and Vrboska.
It is a fantastic time to visit Hvar, watching the island come to life after its winter hibernation – and my favourite time in Jelsa personally. The problem for would-be visitors is that Easter usually falls before the low-cost airlines start their seasonal schedules.
Not in 2017…
Easter Sunday falls on April 16 next year, which is within the easyJet season for flights from London Gatwick to Split. Move quickly, but the current return flight price from London Gatwick to Split return for Easter 2017 is just £60. Croatia expensive to reach out of season? Not always… But check the easyJet website, as prices are sure to rise soon.
