And that was the summer of 2016.
The summer is still shining outside, tourists are still lingering, and people are still swimming, but yesterday marked a significant milestone in the permanent resident’s calendar – the introduction of the Jadrolinija winter ferry schedule, a schedule which will stay in place until late May, which makes the Hvar winter almost 8 months long, according to Jadrolinija.
Gone are the delightful choices of a convenient 07:45 ferry from Stari Grad, and the early afternoon return from Split, and we are back to programming ourselves to adjust to the commuting choices of the very early catamarans, or the three ferries a day from Stari Grad for those living in central Hvar. There is one positive, for this month at least, with the addition of an extra car ferry to and from Stari Grad until the end of October. The fabulous team at Krilo will also keep their popular Split – Milna – Hvar – Korcula – Mljet – Dubrovnik route going until the end of October, although with reduced frequency.
And with the announcement yesterday that the seaplanes have decided to halt all operations indefinitely, the annual feeling of isolaton is setting in. Welcome to Life on a Sunshine Tourist Island – the Winter Edition.
