Hvar Island, known to many as the queen of the Dalmatian islands, has celebrated 140 years of tourism and is considered to be one of the 10 most beautiful islands in the world. Boasting ancient olive trees and fruitful vineyards, crystal blue Adriatic seafront and rocky cliffsides, Hvar is essentially perfect. Hvar is also lucky to have another special natural gift: lavender. And quite frankly, Hvar would not be Hvar without the thick scent of lavender filling the pockets of air that touch your face.
In order to properly honor the fields of lavender Hvar island displays, what better way to worship the fruits of Hvar’s labor than to celebrate these purple princesses with a festival?
Each June, a Lavender festival commences, bringing together locals, tourists, chefs, lavender enthusiasts and nature seekers behind one simple concept: lavender. Being the symbol of Hvar, the lavender vibe is strongest in June as it is fully harvested and thick all around you.
The Lavender festival is full of presentations on lavender distillation, special dishes made specifically with lavender, knick knacks and homemade gifts made around the concept of lavender, activities for children, and of course, live music and a jolly good time.
Each year the festival is held in the village of Velo Grablje, a 15th century old town about a 10 kilometer drive from the town of Hvar.
This year’s Lavender festival will be held from June 24th – June 25th, and we really encourage you to take part in such a visually pleasing (and beautifully smelling) spectacle such as the Lavender Festival this year!
