Zavala resident Peter Illing in a short series on some new dining options on the south side of Hvar.
Konoba Zavala is a family owned place for specialities in traditional grill and peka. Peka has to be ordered the day before due to the needed preparation. The holders have their own wine, prosek, traverica, olive oil, vinegar and hidden delicacies like homemade bread „krushna“ from the pizza oven as well as „muzgavac“, the small octopus, which can only be found in the adriatic sea. It is a very quiet place but also a safe space for children to play. The beautiful Zavala beach is only 700 meters away. The owners also make kids happy with colours and pencils – not to forget the chicken fingers. The car can be parked in between olive trees who give a nice shadow. This charming place is ideal to have a beautiful view to island Scedro and the open sea in direction Italy, even if you only want to go there for a small turkish coffee. The owners are very nice and helpful and stand for the tradition of the south side of Island Hvar to serve only homemade food without GMO or artificial flavors. Here you will eat real natural food. The Facebook voting shows 4,7 points and a highly recommendation, to be the most beautiful restaurant in Zavala – magic moments seem to be possible here (www.facebook.com/konobazavala).
You drive to the place through the serpentines, coming from the Pitve tunel, only about 200 meters before the new built Zavala church. Just passing the road you don’t see the konoba, but direction signs indicate the place. Driving some meters up the hill you will be overwhelmed of this big place in comparison to other konobas, which normally only offer limited space.
Kristina Godinovic and Danijel Malic are organizing the konoba. But also the father, Sime Malic shares his 10 years of Buffet experience in Jelsa. Looking deeper in the roots, even Danijel’s grandfather was in the restaurant business 50 years ago. With a 1 year old heir, the succession seems to prepared. Taking the footsteps of the forefathers always new ways have to be found. This inspiring couple definitely found a new path. They are an example for living a lifetime on the island and working hard to reach future plans. An attribute rating most of the island’s hospitality managers.
