The Hvar wine conquest of Italy continues…
These are good times for the Hvar Wine Association, a collection of 12 of the island’s winemakers, and their attempts to create a brand of Hvar wine are already beginning to bear fruit.
The wine tastings which they are organising all over the island are turning into great events (check out the recent one in Vrboska, as reported by Hvar TV), and some dates for your diaries are Vrbanj (Aug 3), Hvar Town (Aug 5 – details coming soon), and Skor in Stari Grad (August 9 and 12).
While it is important to educate visiting tourists, it is the progress the winemakers are making internationally which is even more exciting. Ivo Caric has just completed his second shipment to the wine stronghold of distant California, as well as the first Hvar winemaker to export to another tough market, Italy.
Tomic and PZ Svirce have new sales outlets in the UK, Zlatan Otok is in the Chinese market, and talks about entering the Norwegian market are ongoing. The arrival on the scene of Master of Wine Jo Ahearne and her interest in producing wine on the island can only help the image of Hvar wine internationally.
Hvar’s winemakers will be represented in Italy at the Wine Fredane Festival, which takes place on August 10-12, with a dedicated tasting of Hvar wines at 18:00 on August 12. So far confirmed as I understand are Caric, Tomic, PZ Svirce and Zlatan Otok.
