I only realised the importance of International Women’s Day when I lived in Russia. We Brits, famous for our romance, don’t celebrate the day, but when I had not presented the secretary with flowers by the end of the day, I was made to understand that my life would be hell in future. In order to salvage my office life in the Urals, I toured the florists of Yekaterinburg looking for a nice bunch. Of course they were all sold out, and I had to make do with a rather pathetic looking bunch of flowers. The secretary was thrilled, however, when I went round to her apartment with the flowers. At least she was for about half an hour as I asked if I could borrow them back as I had to deliver flowers to the other secretary, and there were none left in the city.
