The Island of Hvar in 100 Pictures: 48. Tartajun and Pjover

Total Croatia News

There is some great activity going on in the hilltop villages of Hvar.

I am a big fan of the efforts of the younger generation on the island to revive older traditions and customs, led by the associations of Tartajun in Dol and Pjover in Velo Grablje. Apart from being very cool guys who get the best girls, the work they have done, and continue to do, is mightily impressive.

From nothing, Tartajun started the edible dormouse festival (or puhijada), which is now the biggest festival on the island, and their magazine has some excellent and very well researched material about the island’s history and traditions.

Not to be outdone, Pjover has put Velo Grablje on the world map with its excellent lavender festival, just one initiative which is regenerating this village with a population of just five people.

The future of Hvar’s heritage is in safe hands with the younger generation.
