The Rise and Rise of Wine in Hvar Town Tourism

All the Hvar nightlife headlines may surround the party these days, but there has been a very interesting development in the last couple of years in another aspect of Hvar’s nightlife – the rise of the wine bar.

Middle-aged friends visiting Hvar Town over the last ten years have often complained that there was very little on offer for them after dinner in a town which was dominated by the offer of Carpe Diem and Veneranda. How that has changed in recent times…

I think I am correct in saying that when Hvar’s original wine bar, 3 Prsuta, opened its doors several years ago in a small side street off the main square, it was the first wine bar in all Dalmatia. A combination of an excellent range of wines, some fine nibbles and a very vibrant atmosphere has made 3 Prsuta a firm favourite, and it is remains one of Hvar’s popular nightspots.

For a while 3 Prsuta was the only wine bar in town, but in the last couple of years, it has been joined by several others – Red Red Wine Bar, Hedonist, Vintage, Soley and Suncani’s new wine bar Marco’s. Each with its own approach, each with its own contribution to the town’s nightlife scene.

And people are liking them…

Every few weeks or so, we do an overview of the top 10 Hvar restaurants on TripAdvisor. The restaurant list invariably has some non-restaurant entries, and I was struck by this week’s list, which had a heavy wine influence.

Leading the way at number 3 is the original and presumably still the best – 3 Prsuta. It was followed at number 5 by Red Red Wine Bar, which opened a couple of years ago in the street behind the main riva, and has quickly become a favourite for many. At number 12 is Soley Bar and Shop. Three wine bars in the top 12 TripAdvisor restaurants – while all the nightlife headlines are on the Hvar party, here is a nice Hvar nightlife development for the older crowd, whose clubbing days are over them.

The rise in the Hvar wine bar mirrors the rise of Hvar wine tourism, as more and more tourists are discovering the fascinating 2400 year wine story, trying the local wines and taking wine tours. If you would like to learn more about Hvar wine tours, click here
