150 cyclists from all over Dalmatia participated in the first Dugopolje cycling race held by the Tourist Board of the municipality of Dugopolje and the Cycling Club ”Timun” from Split. The race took place last Sunday, June 5.

A stroke of luck hit Dugopolje this time as the bike race had to be postponed twice this past April and May due to adverse weather conditions. Fortunately this time, the drops of rain fell only after all the cyclists safely returned to route after a long 20 km ride.

The race swept through the main streets Dugopolje – reaching everywhere from the parish Church of St. Michael, over the economic zone and Dugopolje fields, in the direction of Kotlenice and through the caves at Vranjače, a protected geomorphological natural monument.

Before coming to the cave, cyclists had to climb a 4km long uphill battle. After some quick refreshments (and much needed stretching from those hills), the cyclists were ready to see what the cave had to offer.

The start and end point of the cycling route was the Dugopolje fire station where all participants afterwards waited for a party with a folklore performance by local KUD ”Pleter”.

These sports and recreational events are an opportunity for the promotion of cycling tourism and active holidays in the Dalmatian hinterland. They are an excellent example of cooperation between the local tourism community with bike clubs and associations whose goal is to promote healthy living and the increasingly popular sport of cycling.
