December 4, 2023 – After two extremely successful editions of the Night of Fortresses event, which connected and promoted programs at 45 fortification locations in six European countries, the organizers announced the third edition of the event, which will take place on Friday, May 10, 2024.
By creating a diverse program, writes Turističke Priče, the Night of Fortresses event successfully enriches the cultural and tourist offer in the pre-season and expands and strengthens cooperation between cities and organizations that manage the established cultural heritage.
All established sites in Europe and other heritage institutions will be able to participate in the Night of Fortresses this year. They can organize various cultural, artistic, educational, and entertainment programs for visitors; including exhibitions, lectures, workshops, music programs, film screenings, dance performances, plays, organized tours, open days, etc.
The aim of the event is to improve the cultural and tourist offer in European cities with established heritage and to raise awareness of the potential and importance of the valorization of cultural heritage as a generator of the development of cultural tourism.
Applications for participation in the 2024 Night of Fortresses will soon be open for stakeholders in culture, local and regional self-government units, tourist boards, and other institutions that manage established localities via the application form on the event’s website.
The quality and significance of the Night of Fortresses as a cross-border cultural manifestation that connects established locations throughout Europe was recognized by the international associations EFFORTS and FORTE CULTURA, and the event is promoted at the European level as part of the European Fortress Summer event.
“With excellent organization and an excellent program, the international manifestation Night of Fortresses successfully connects and promotes the motto of the EFFORTS organization, From defensive walls to open arms of welcome. Fortresses, fortifications, and other defensive heritage, all that once separated people and nations, now unites them for the Night of Fortresses. In just two years, the event has grown into an important part of the European Fortress Summer and has attracted numerous participants from different countries who jointly successfully promote the fortified monumental heritage”, says Rafaël Deroo, Secretary General of EFFORTS (European Federation of Fortified Sites).
The Night of Fortresses, a cultural and tourist event that takes place at established monuments of cultural heritage, was held for the first time in 2022 on the territory of Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina as a result of the joint European project FORTITUDE. The organizers of the Fortress of Culture event in Šibenik, the City of Karlovac, the Municipality of Bar, and the City of Banja Luka have been joined by partners from Trebinje and Ulcinj this year.
