Hum na Sutli, a town inhabited by just over 5,000 people in the Krapina-Zagorje County of Croatia, became the first place in the whole of Croatia with something very special for new mothers – a breastfeeding bench.
While it seems reasonable to think that large cities like Zagreb or Split would have a implemented a breastfeeding bench first, this small town in the north of Croatia has made waves thanks to Croatian breastfeeding support group ‘Humska kap ljubavi – Općina Hum na Sutli‘.
An organization just 3 years old, ‘Humska kap ljubavi – Općina Hum na Sutli‘ was able to successfully install the bench into the park near the local primary school during “World Breastfeeding Week”, an event that took place during the first week of August.

The project came to fruition with the help of the group’s members and mother Ines Petek, as well as with financial support from their municipality and Mayor Zvonko Jutriša to build and install the bench.
In an effort to make new mothers comfortable, the main goal of this project was to encourage others that breastfeeding is natural, necessary, and very important for new moms. The more awareness there is about this subject, the less anyone should feel ashamed.
We hope that other towns and cities will soon follow suit.
