“It was All Just a Good Dream” was honoured in the documentary film category at the 50th international independent film festival Worldfest in Houston
The documentary directed by Branko Ištvančić received the Bonze Remi award in the documentary film category. This newest recognition came at the 50th edition of one of the oldest festivals of independent film in the world where many famous directors received their first recognitions: Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, David Lynch, Ang Lee, Ridley Scott, Coen brothers, Brian De Palma and others, Dnevno.hr reported on May 9, 2017.
The disturbing, intimate and moving documentary “It was All Just a Good Dream” studies events from the time of the war in Croatia, the arrival of a young French volunteer Jean-Michel Nicolier to Croatia, his struggle, the tragedy of the defence of Vukovar and his martyr death on Ovčara, all through the perspective of his mother Lyliane Fournier. In the movie she searches for information to find her son’s remains.
The initiators of this significant project are the authors of the film Branko Ištvančić and producer Antun Ivanković. During the previous year the movie was shown in cinemas across Croatia, generating plenty of interest and seen by over 15.000 viewers, an exceptional result for a domestic documentary. The film uses a different approach to promote the truth and values of the Homeland War and was filmed in cooperation with the Croatian Volunteers Defenders of the Homeland War association, Dr. Ante Starčević from Tovarnik association, Audio-visual Creativity Association Artizana from Zagreb and co-produced with Croatian Radiotelevision. The project was supported by the Ministry of Croatian Defenders, the Adris Foundation and Vukovar-Srijem County. The production took several years and involved numerous professional film crews and other associates.
The premiere of the movie took place on February 17, 2016 in the Europa cinema in Zagreb. It was listed among ten finalists for the respected award, URTI Grand Prix for Author’s Documentary in France, receiving it at the Trsat festival in Rijeka the Grand Prix for best movie, and awarded for best direction and best music. The Beyond the Borders international festival in Greece declared it the best documentary movie, also listed in the Docs for Sale programme at the prestigious IDFA documentary film festival in Amsterdam.
