Croatia Preparing for New Snow Storms

Total Croatia News

ZAGREB, February 22, 2018 – Following forecasts about inclement wintry weather on the way, Croatia has braced itself for more snow and freezing conditions, and members of the National Protection and Rescue Directorate and troops of the Armed Forces will be available in removing the consequences of snow storms in mountainous regions of the country in the coming days.

On Thursday, Lika County Prefect Darko Milinović requested assistance for that part of Croatia where snow could build up to more than a metre.

Snowfalls and blizzards are causing havoc along motorways and roads across the country. Ferry services between the mainland and islands are also being interrupted.

The Croatian Automobile Club advises drivers to drive carefully through Lika due to freezing rain. Most roads were wet and very slippery, especially bridges and viaducts due to low temperatures on Thursday. Due to winter driving conditions, there is a traffic ban on freight vehicles with trailers and all other vehicles are required to use winter equipment on routes through snow-hit regions.

A winter weather and wind warning has been issued for the regions hit by blizzards and snowfalls.

Workers of the national broadcaster (HRT) transmitter on Mount Biokovo in the hinterland of the coastal city of Makarska had to climb to their workplace using ropes as snow ploughs could not remove two-metre snow drifts on the road to the transmitter at Sv. Jure summit on Wednesday, It took them 90 minutes to reach the transmitter whereas in regular weather conditions, they pass that route in 20 minutes.
