March the 23rd, 2026 – Croatia is home to make lakes and waterways, but have you ever heard of the relatively secret Croatian lakes that look just like eyes?

As Pufni kofer/Lana Mindoljevic writes, the rugged Dalmatian hinterland has successfully attracted more and more tourists for whom the sea, sun and beaches are not enough for a full holiday. This beautiful and still more or less undiscovered area hides charming old towns like Imotski and Sinj, as well as truly incredible nature. The area around Imotski is protected as part of the UNESCO Geopark Biokovo – Imotski Lakes, and some of its lakes (not the Red and Blue ones, of course) are still not well known to tourists. The area is home to two Croatian lakes that look just like two eyes.

Aptly named Dva oka jezero, how they got their name doesn’t need any special explanation: a view of them from the air reveals two small circular lakes, about forty metres in diameter, that really do look like eyes framed by “eyelashes” of grass and trees. It’s a quiet place where you not only observe nature, but it also watches you.

These two almost perfectly round lakes are one of the sources of the Vrljika River, a 20-kilometre-long karst waterway. These lakes never dry up, and the colour of the water is truly fascinating. Thanks to filtration through limestone rocks, the water is exceptionally clear, and on sunny days it shimmers in shades of turquoise and emerald. This effect often has an almost fluorescent effect, which further enhances the impression of them being unreal and makes this place one of the most photographed in the whole Imotski region – especially if you’re a drone owner.

Although at first glance they seem peaceful and tame, these Croatian lakes that look like two eyes hide a complex underground world. Divers have investigated the springs and determined that they are deep karst springs that lead to a complex system of underground channels. The exact depth hasn’t yet been fully explored. There are assumptions that this underground system is much, much larger than it appears on the surface.

The water temperature in the Croatian lakes that look just like two eyes is almost constant and ranges between 10 and 12 °C throughout the entire year. The reason for this is that the water comes from deep underground reservoirs, protected from external influences. As a result of such conditions, the water is very rich in oxygen and ideal for the life of certain species of fish, including trout, which prefer and thrive in cold and clean water streams.

The area around the spring is a tiny but complex ecosystem. The constant supply of water allows the growth of lush vegetation, willows, reeds and various aquatic plants that create an almost fairy-tale landscape. This combination of water, greenery and rocks gives the area a special peace and a feeling of isolation, as if you have stepped into a hidden world far from everyday life – and yet you’re only about ten minutes from Imotski.
