The new HTV5 channel will start broadcasting in January.
In January 2018, Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) will launch a television channel for Croats living outside of Croatia and other international viewers, reports tportal.hr on December 7, 2017.
HRT explained that the “the launch of the HTV5 channel, with a focus on Croats living outside of Croatia and the international public, is in accordance with the provisions of the agreement between the Croatian Radio Television and the Croatian Government.” The first broadcast is expected in January.
“At this point, we cannot provide additional technical details, but we point out that, for Croatian Radio Television, as a public broadcaster, it is of great importance to improve information services for Croats outside of the Republic of Croatia,” said the HRT.
The new television channel will be broadcast on satellite and internet platforms, and it will mostly consist of shows and news produced by the HRT and shown on domestic TV channels.
There will also be a special show for Croats outside Croatia which, as stated, will “cover particularly interesting topics for viewers abroad, as well as news in foreign languages (English, Spanish, German).”
Depending on the production possibilities, the channel will broadcast “promotional and documentary programmes in foreign languages, with the aim of promoting Croatian cultural and tourist attractions for the international viewers.”
According to plans, HTV5 will broadcast 24 hours a day. The contents of the diaspora TV channel will include at least 25 percent of news and current affairs programmes, and ten percent of drama, educational and scientific, music and cultural programmes each. There will also be a minimum share of seven percent of entertainment programmes, 0.5 percent of religious shows, while the percentages of sports, marketing and other programming groups have not yet been determined.
HTV5 is being launched on the basis of the agreement between the HRT and the Croatian government which was signed in late September and sets out the public mission and programming obligations of the public broadcaster, as well as the amount and sources of funding. The agreement will be valid from 1 January 2018 to the end of 2022.
