A new direction for a Dalmatian cinematic icon.
“Central” cinema, for many years the best and the most prestigious cinema in Split, will soon become history. According to rumours circulating in the city, the cinema will be converted into a nightclub unique in Split, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on November 8, 2015.
The Ekran Company, which is the owner of the “Central” cinema, did not want to discuss this issue. “At this time, we do not want to go out in public with any information and we do not want to talk about it”, said briefly Snježana Kuzmanić, director of Ekran.
However, where there is smoke there is usually fire as well, and the unofficial story claims that in about a month, after the contract is signed between Ekran and their business partners, the redesign of the “Central” cinema will commence.
The cinema and its 600 square metres of space will be turned into a nightclub on two floors, with the upper floor being reserved for VIP guests. The whole club will be able to accommodate between 800 and 1,000 guests. According to unofficial information, construction works should be completed by the beginning of June next year, just for the beginning of the main tourist season.
“Central” cinema has for almost 50 years been a favourite gathering place for film connoisseurs. Film fans used to say that, if a movie is shown in “Central” then it must be good, because in that cinema the world’s greatest films would be shown.
However, “Central” has in recent years been quite empty, especially since “Cinestar” and “Cineplex” opened their cinemas, so the 460 comfortable seats at the “Central” were usually mostly vacant. So, it seems that “Central” will follow in the footsteps of the former “Marjan” cinema which was converted into a hospitality establishment a few years ago.
So, if all goes as planned, by the next summer tourists and locals will be able to spend some quality time in a new nightclub in the city centre.
