The acclaimed manifestation in Žminj might end up breaking a record this year

Did you get a chance to read this great piece about pinca (also called sirnica), the beloved traditional Easter bread prepared all over Croatia? If not, you’re advised to do so – it just might inspire you to roll up your sleeves and do some baking.

Easter is fast approaching, and Istrians have decided to mark the beginning of spring with an ambitious attempt. On March 25, the agritourist estate Paladnjaki in Žminj will host the sixth edition of a manifestation dedicated to the Istrian pinca, starting from 2 in the afternoon.

The pinca manifestation will make for a proper feast: some Easter-related customs, plenty of traditional dishes, entertainment and cheerful competitions. The central event will be a pinca-making demonstration, with skillful ladies from Žminj showing the audience how to prepare this traditional sweet delicacy. And for the crown jewel, the aforementioned ambitious attempt: a local named Zdenka Jakus announced she’ll be baking a pinca measuring some 45 kg in weight – if she succeeds, she’ll break a Guinness record.

“I’ve tried this to some extent and it should work out. Based on my experience, one kilo of flour mixed with other ingredients makes for a pinca of 2 kg. Regardless of its size, the pinca should be baked for the same amount of time, some 50 minutes, and I’ll bake it under a 75-cm lid”, Jakus said.

“We don’t want for Easter to become an Americanised consumerist manifestation, but wish to preserve our old customs instead”, stated Mayor of Žminj Željko Plavčić. 

The manifestation named ‘Istrian sweet bread baked under the lid’ is one of the projects that led the Tourist Board of Žminj to win the Simply the Best award in the category of innovative and creative projects in tourism in October 2017. The dust hasn’t even settled, and they’re going for a Guinness record – fingers crossed!
