ZAGREB, February 25, 2018 – This year’s winter bird count in Kopački Rit Nature Park in eastern Croatia found 70 bird species and 20,220 birds living at 40 sites in the park, the park’s management announced.
The bird count was carried out by the park’s staff and the Croatian Society for Bird and Nature Protection.
Of the total number of species recorded, 24 were wading birds, and 17,961 wading birds accounted for 88.8 percent of the total number of birds in the park.
In 2016, 61 bird species were identified, nine fewer than this year. In 2017, full monitoring was not possible because some of the areas of the park could not be reached because of ice on the Drava and Danube rivers.
