In Pula this summer?
To celebrate the European Year of Cultural Heritage, the City of Pula, Croatia is to play host to the world renowned National Folk Dance Ensemble Lado. The concert which is being organised by the Meritum group, will take place on the 6th of July, 2018. The venue for Lado in Pula is Pula’s incredible 2,000 year old amphitheatre. It promises to be a truly spectacular event in this most befitting venue.
The dance ensemble consists of 37 dancers who not only dance but in addition they also sing while they perform. They are accompanied by a group of fifteen musicians who play approximately 80 different traditional and classical instruments. Lado has seen numerous famous Croatian ethnographers choreographers, music arrangers, and folklorists work closely with them.
The customs and the traditions:
Lado have been described as a travelling museum with all the 52 performers dressed in a collection of traditional costumes. These elaborate and decorative costumes further enrich their impressive choreography. They relay via dance, music, motion, facial expression and song the traditional Croatian folk stories and tales of long forgotten customs.

Awards and history:
The Lado ensemble has won numerous national and international awards and competitions since its formation in 1949 by Choreographer Zvonko Ljevaković. They have performed over 5,000 times in Croatia. They frequently perform abroad and have also appeared in 48 countries. Lado are rightly regarded as one of Croatia’s most successful cultural exports. Lado has continued with its initial intention which was of finding and collecting samples of traditional Croatian music and dance, representing the rich and diverse regional, musical and choreographic traditions of all of Croatia.
Ideju regruti:
This will be the first time since Croatia gained its independence that Lado will perform in Pula, and they will present their new program “Ideju regruti” from the famous choreography by Ivan Ivančan. The program has been artistically put together by his son Andrija Ivančan.
