September the 9th, 2024 – The Lošinj Maritime Festival shines the spotlight on this part of Croatia’s rich seafaring past, focusing on the economic branch that put food on the tables of coastal and island families for centuries.
As Morski writes, the Lošinj Maritime Festival successfully returns this gorgeous island back to the golden age in which seafaring and endless maritime traditions dominated. Visitors will be able to step into this proverbial time machine and be transported back through the centuries, where they’ll learn more about the rich history of shipbuilding and seafaring on this island.
The Lošinj Maritime Festival programme includes five impressive regattas, sporting competitions, concerts, educational lectures and workshops. This year’s festival is dedicated to Agostin Straulin, a well-known sailor from Mali Lošinj who won Olympic gold in Helsinki back in 1952 and then silver in Melbourne a few years later in 1956. A memorial to Straulin will be unveiled on September the 10th in front of his birthplace, reports Novi list.
In the second weekend of the Lošinj Maritime Festival, more specifically on September the 14th, the Maritime Evening and the 42nd Lošinj Cruise Regatta, which attracts ships from all over Croatia, as well as from neighbouring Slovenia and Italy, will be held. The last regatta of the festival will be the 48th Nerezinska regatta of traditional sailing boats, scheduled for September the 21st, with the aim of preserving the heritage of traditional wooden boats.
Throughout the duration of the Lošinj Maritime Festival, visitors will be able to come experience the life of local sailors through the ages through VR glasses at the Nerezinac camp. They will also be able to take part in guided tours that bring Lošinj’s incredible maritime history to life.
