About 62 million kuna have been invested in the sports complex.

The most modern pool complex in Croatia was officially inaugurated on Tuesday in Vukovar. The Fund for Reconstruction and Development of the Town of Vukovar invested 62 million kuna in the project, and it will continue to co-finance the future operating costs of the pool complex, reports Poslovni.hr on February 28, 2017.

The complex was opened by Minister of Regional Development and EU Funds Gabrijela Žalac, who said that she was happy that Vukovar had been given such an extremely valuable sport facility, which should have a positive effect on the further development of the town, through opening of new jobs and usage of the sports facilities.

Mayor of Vukovar Ivan Penava said that the new pool complex in Vukovar was built on the same site where in the 1960s an old town pool was located. It was later severely devastated during the Homeland War in the 1990s. “This complex includes both indoor and outdoor swimming pools and was built for all people of Vukovar. Therefore, I call on you to jointly take care of this facility in order for it to benefit the town for a long time”, said Penava.

President of the Fund for Reconstruction and Development of the Town of Vukovar Ljiljana Blaževac said the Vukovar swimming pools had to meet a number of strict criteria in order to be considered suitable for swimming competitions to be held there in the future. “The huge role in all of this was played by Tomislav Karlo, former Croatian swimmer and secretary general of the Croatian Swimming Federation, who used his extensive knowledge and experience so that the pool in Vukovar would be the best in Croatia with regards to the quality of facility components”, said Blaževac.

She added that the Fund would co-finance the operating costs of the pool with 3.5 million kuna a year. The total costs are estimated at about 4.5 million kuna annually. The complex includes an indoor swimming pool 50x25x2 metres, which alone cost about 50 million kuna, as well as two outdoor pools (with a water slide and a sun deck), which cost about 10 million kuna.

Prior to the official opening, Minister of Regional Development and EU Funds Gabrijela Žalac met with Mayor Penava and discussed various reconstruction and development projects in Vukovar.
