novalja zero emission corridor project

May the 8th, 2025 – Novalja has embarked on a very ambitious Zero Emission Corridor project which aims to, among other things, harness the power of the sea.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the Town of Novalja on the lunar-like island of Pag has now officially launched its Zero Emission Corridor (ZEC) H2 project. This extremely ambitious and innovative project aims to establish the production and distribution of green hydrogen using exclusively renewable energy sources. The move marks a very significant step forward in embracing all things green and reducing harm to the environment.

As part of the project preparation, various locations across Novalja were analysed, including the ports of Novalja, Žigljen and Tovarnele. As a first concrete step, the construction of a pilot plant in the Port of Žigljen was launched. The plant will use innovative Croatian-made technology that uses the energy of sea waves and water electrolysis to produce green hydrogen. The plant for the Novalja Zero Emission Corridor project is expected to be fully operational by 2027.

This environmentally friendly project carries a strong vision of the future, which is for the town to be one without any harmful emissions and with complete energy self-sustainability by 2030. According to the authorities in this island town, green hydrogen and excess energy produced will be used to power electric charging stations, public and municipal transport vehicles, public lighting, as well as for the energy supply of the town’s buildings.

As a country so rich in natural assets and with impressive biodiversity, more and more efforts are being poured into sourcing energy more sustainably nationwide. By harnessing solar and wind power through various hefty investments in various locations, as well as utilising the power of the Adriatic Sea, Croatia is slowly but surely transforming into a green oasis.
