You’ll often see us report about cleanup actions taking place all over the Adriatic. We think it’s important to pay tribute to individuals who are passionate and dedicated enough to roll up their sleeves and get to work, ridding our shores and beaches of waste and debris. And yet, no matter how many times you see a photo of an otherwise gorgeous beach covered in plastic bags and other garbage, people still manage to find a way to surprise you. Not in a good way, unfortunately.
There are times when a simple cleanup action ends up in such unimaginable results, you can’t help but to wonder if some people have any decency whatsoever. Last week, the members of the Abyss Dubrovnik diving centre cleaned up the seabed in the ACI Marina Dubrovnik situated in the town of Komolac. They didn’t emerge from the sea with a couple of plastic bottles or a tire as one would usually expect. No, this time around, the divers pulled out 73 shopping carts that used to belong to a nearby store, along with two carrier tricycles used for produce transport and a waste bin with a capacity of 1100 litres.
The store is located near the marina, and the shopping carts are mostly used by its guests, yachtsmen who stock up on food and drinks before they set off on the next leg of their sailing journey. It’s not exactly clear whether it’s the customers who decide to dump the carts in the sea or if they end up in Dubrovnik waters in some other mysterious way.
But still, it’s worrying that no one has yet decided to put a stop to this senseless littering. If people dare to behave like this in a marina that’s heavily monitored by surveillance cameras and guards, asks Morski, can you even imagine how they go about the open sea?
‘Maybe it was for Neptune’s shopping day’, suggested one person in the Facebook comments. Can’t help but to laugh, just like to this video showing there’s always some way to reuse the waste:
