ZAGREB, October 25, 2018 – Finance Minister Zdravko Marić announced on Thursday an increase in excise taxes on cigarettes in Croatia, as a result of which cigarette prices would go up by up to two kuna by the end of the year.

Marić made the announcement at a conference on export promotion in Dubrovnik. He noted that according to European methodology Croatian excise taxes on tobacco products had fallen below the minimum.

“There will be a revision, but our revision is much smaller than that being proposed by other departments. Under our proposal, the average price of a pack of cigarettes will go up by up to two kuna by the end of the year,” Marić said.

The “other departments” referred to by Marić is the Health Ministry, whose minister Milan Kujundžić has said that a realistic solution should be sought to increase cigarette and alcohol prices by 50 percent so that a portion of that money could be directed into the healthcare system.
