Rijeka’s “Port of Diversity” project was selected as the best Croatian entry beating Pula, Osijek and Dubrovnik

The decision on the Croatian city to host the European Capital of Culture was made on March 24, 2016, at the Mimara Museum in Zagreb and Rijeka beat Osijek, Dubrovnik and Pula for the title.

Rijeka’s bid entitled “Port of Diversity” received the highest scores after their final presentation which was held earlier in the day. The presentation was given in front of the independent panel of cultural experts and it was attended by Rijeka team members Vojko Obersnel, Ivan Šarar, Irena Kregar Šegota, Chris Torch, Vuk Ćosić, Tanja Kalčić, Slaven Tolj and Slobodanka Mišković.

 

Rijeka will share the European Capital of Culture 2020 title with an Irish city which will be selected in July 2016. Shortlisted Irish cities are Galway, Limerick and Waterford.

During 2020, as the European Capital of Culture, Rijeka will host a series of cultural events that highlight the richness and diversity of cultures in Europe, celebrate the cultural features Europeans share, increase European citizens’ sense of belonging to a common cultural area and foster the contribution of culture to the development of cities.
