rogovo viewpoint

October the 2nd, 2025 – Have you ever heard of the Rogovo viewpoint? It’s one of Croatia’s most incredible, but it remains less famous than the rest…

As Putni kofer/Lana Mindoljevic writes, the path to the beautiful Rogovo viewpoint is gentle, peaceful, surrounded by trees and low vegetation. After a pleasant walk, which lasts less than fifteen minutes, one of the most beautiful views in Croatia will open up before you. The gorgeous Rogovo viewpoint in the Krka National Park is an undiscovered secret of this beautiful region, worth every step and every little drop of sweat.

Before the hiking trail you take to get to the Rogovo viewpoint, there’s a road that leads from the Rupe – Laškovica road. The signpost to the viewpoint is a large board covered with photographs that is hard to miss. If you begin from Skradin, it will take you about twenty minutes by car. At the beginning the road is asphalt, then it becomes a typical field road, at the end of which you’ll find a parking lot and from there your walk to this beautiful and not well known viewpoint begins. It ends with that spectacular view of the Među gredama canyon, cut out into the grey barren land, dotted with hardy shrubs still managing to survive in an often harsh environment.

The beautiful and powerful Krka River, which is actually peaceful and calm in its upper reaches, is surrounded by a picturesque landscape, with views reaching all the way to Visovac and Roški slap (waterfall), and the entire location is as rich in history as it is in natural beauty. At the very top, at the corner of the canyon, is this amazing viewpoint, which got its name from its location. There used to be a medieval fortress called Rogovo at that point, and it is believed that Roški slap was actually named after it.

The Rogovo viewpoint is large and spacious, and as you walk along it, you will be greeted by a new, unexpected sight at every angle. The most special one of all, however, lies at the very top, from which you can see the majestic Visovac Lake. In the middle of it, like a fairy-tale pontoon, Visovac itself can be seen “floating”. This islet is only 200 metres long and 150 metres wide, so you can explore it in its entirety in just a few minutes. It is also home to the smallest book on Earth!

Since 1445, the Franciscan monastery of Our Lady of Mercy and the Church of Our Lady of Visovac have proudly stood there. The Franciscans still live there today, pray, cultivate beautiful gardens and keep a rich collection in the Monastery Museum. During spring and summer, you will see excursion boats from this viewpoint that travel to the very upper reaches of the Krka River.

The strait you’ll be able to see is one of the most geomorphologically interesting parts of the entire Krka River system. It is only 500 metres long and 500 to 100 metres wide, cut into vertical cliffs about 150 metres high. It is therefore not surprising that this unusual landscape was chosen as the filming location for the popular Winnetou films, based on the famous books written by Karl May.

The promenade that leads to it is just one of the numerous hiking and cycling trails that adorn the sprawling Krka National Park. Visitors have access to 22 different educational hiking trails, spanning a total length of 47 kilometres. There are 12 cycling trails and they are adapted to all levels of physical fitness. There’s truly something special about walking or cycling along the banks of the amazing Krka River, merging with the beauty of the karst and the crystalline water, and getting better acquainted with the beautiful landscapes and rich ecosystem that surrounds you.
