One unnamed driver came across a bewildering sight while he was driving along the Rijeka highway near Bakar town: three running baby bears!
Bears and other wild animals aren’t such a rare sight on Croatian roads, but in most cases, they are spotted in less populated areas such as Gorski kotar, where the roads often pass through forests and rural parts. Seeing three cubs without their mother, on a road in an urban area, is something not many people experience twice in a lifetime.
“I slowed down and turned on all four indicator lights, so one of the drivers behind me wouldn’t accidentally run them over”, said the man who caught the three cubs on video and sent the footage to 24 sata. The cubs were looking for an exit, and they were running in the direction of Krk island.
“They were running away from my car, they seemed to be scared. One of them did turn for a second though, then turned back and continued to run”, the man said.
Fortunately, the traffic was slow and only two more cars passed by, so the bears quickly made it to safety. Professor Đuro Huber of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine said the cubs are around nine months old. They will probably stay with their mother until spring rolls around, and they are able to survive on their own at this point in case they’ve lost their mom.
