Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities to Renovate Prevlaka Fortress?

Lauren Simmonds

Prevlaka lies at the very tip of southern Croatia as the country borders with Montenegro.

As DubrovnikNet reported on the 17th of May, 2017, the Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities has been wanting to negotiate the renovation of an otherwise totally deserted and neglected fortress on Prevlaka. The Society is responsible for a great many renovations, reconstructions and general care of a number of such places in the area, including the famous Dubrovnik city walls, Ston and Sokol Grad/Tower deep in the hilly Konavle countryside. In this move, it has been reported that the society has the support of the Municipality of Konavle.

Niko Kapetanic, President of the Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquities stated that like all other monuments that the society renews and renovates, the model would be one of self-sustainability worthy of that particular area and the history it represents. He noted that it is necessary to take things step by step, all in agreement with the state, under whose ownership the neglected yet impressive fortress will remain. Among other things on the agenda, the idea and the project will be discussed today with Minister Maric.

The fortress was built in the 1850’s and has been left completely unattended to for a number of years.
