Eco-Veterans: Elementary School in Velika Gorica Funds Trips through Recycling

Daniela Rogulj

Schools in Velika Gorica are teaching their kids to be ‘green’ from an early age.

Kindergartens in Velika Gorica aren’t the only ones that are ecologically active and regularly fly green flags as part of the eco-school list. There are even institutions in this municipality we would consider ‘veterans’. This impressive title can be praised by the Elementary School “Rakitovec”, which has renewed its eco-school status for eight years, reports Lokalni.Vecernji List on one 15, 2018.

Thanks to numerous ecological actions and workshops, children of the school collect old paper for recycling, batteries or plastic caps which has awarded them with a silver status. Most of the school kids begin their eco-development in kindergarten, though the continuation of actions aimed at preserving nature in elementary school is considered important for the entire community.

“We have collected more than 21,000 kilograms of old paper. The plastic caps weigh in at about 400 kilograms, and the old batteries are 463 kilograms. We have come in first for collecting batteries in Croatia for three years already, and this year the competition was very strong. Namely, 180 schools and kindergartens collected old batteries. We’ve been collecting caps for just three years, old batteries for seven, and paper for fifteen years,” said teacher Miroslav Grahovac.

The school in Rakitovac is the only school in Croatia that, with just fifty students, has managed to collect two tons of old batteries in seven years. Aside from recycling and collecting old paper, batteries and plastic caps, the students preserve the environment and acquire ‘green’ habits for the future – and with the prizes and money collected, they can equip the school with technical aids and take a free excursion each year.

“This is the ninth time that we will take a one-day trip, which we will finance thanks to the money we have earned from the collecting paper and batteries. In addition, lunch will be provided for our students and, of course, ice cream,” Grahovac said.

An incredible effort by the schoolchildren and teachers of Zagreb County!
