The street art comes to eastern Croatia.

When Filip Mrvelj painted the first 3D anamorphic image in Vukovar two years ago, no one expected that the street artwork would become the most photographed motif in the town of Vukovar. Consequently, the “Vukovarart – Port of Art” event was again organized last year, which produced several additional 3D murals, which also caused great interest, reports Večernji List on June 19, 2018.

The project continued this year and in just a few days five new murals were painted on five locations. “This year we have five new murals, unlike last year when we were focused on 3D anamorphic images. We are delighted with this year’s performances, and the weather has served us well. We have offered to Vukovar five different styles, five different expressions. This year certainly represents a step forward compared to the last one,” said Mrvelj, adding that the project, with the support and backing of the town authorities, will be continued in the coming years as well.

He also noted that the diversity of styles and themes further enriches the offer of the “street gallery” in Vukovar. He thanked the town authorities for allowing the artists full freedom of expression.

As part of this year’s “Vukovarart – Port of Art” project, 900 square metres of walls were painted at five different locations in the Borovo Naselje neighbourhood in Vukovar, with new paintings covering nearly 700 square metres.

Locals were able to observe the creation of new artworks by Marina Capdevile (Spain), Rickey Lee Gordon (South Africa), Vera Bugatti and Fabio Fedele (Italy), Elle&Pitra (France) and two Croatian artists, Chez and Sarme. In contrast to the past years, this year’s murals were painted by three female artists, and all the new paintings immediately became a new tourist attraction in the town. Photos of murals are shared on social networks, and locals like to have their pictures taken in front of them.

Mayor of Vukovar Ivan Penava noted that he was satisfied with the fact that the project has continued and that five new artworks were created.

“Citizens are satisfied, as well as artists who participated in the project. Of course, we will continue with this in the following years, since Vukovar deserves only the best. With the conclusion of the third edition of the festival, we now have 13 works of art that will have a positive impact on the environment, but also on all the citizens and visitors who can recognize them as something wonderful indeed. It is important to spread these positive vibrations to all parts of our town and that was why we started this story three years ago, and we will certainly continue. Vukovar deserves only the best, and this project brings to Vukovar some of the best artists in the world, who have made our town even more beautiful,” said Penava.
