ZAGREB, March 23, 2018 – World Water Day is observed on March 22 to highlight the importance of freshwater and to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources and this year’s theme – Nature for Water – explores how we can use nature to overcome the water challenges of the 21st century.

“Considering the most vulnerable areas in the wake of unfavourable weather conditions, fund (50,000 kuna) that were earmarked to celebrate World Water Day this year will be redirected to families in Hrvatska Kostajnica who have been left without their homes, destroyed in landslides,” the Ministry of Environment Protection and Energy reported on Thursday.

Water availability and supply, as well as its quality and risk management, and how to reduce floods, droughts and water pollution are some of the topics in focus for this year’s World Water Day, the ministry told HINA.

The objective of sustainable development sets the obligation that by 2030 everyone is enabled access to drinking water, including protection of the natural environment and the reduction of pollution, the ministry said.

The ministry added the country’s water management authority – Hrvatske Vode – was working on adapting water management measures that lean on the eco-system, technological measures such as developing an effective irrigation system and providing access to freshwater areas.
