July 7, 2023 – Move over Tuscany, move over Azure Coast. In 2022, in August alone, the most tourist popular region in Europe counted more than 7.5 million overnight tourist stays.
As Poslovni writes, in the category of short-term accommodation via the Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group or TripAdvisor platforms, rural areas in 2022 experienced a strong growth all across Europe. On the other hand, the big cities such as Berlin, Prague or Vienna, according to Eurostat data, are still in the red compared to the period before the pandemic.
The total number of guests at the level of the entire EU in 2022 exceeded the pre-pandemic 2019 figure by 7%. However, there are considerable differences from region to region. And it is particularly interesting for Croatia to look at the data by region, not by country. If you analyse it that way, you’ll find that among the twenty most popular regions in Europe are six each from France and Spain, five from Italy, followed by two Portuguese regions and one Croatian region.
The Most Popular Tourist Region in Europe in Summer 2022
That one region, though, Adriatic Croatia, takes the first place and is arguably the most popular tourist region in Europe for the summer months (June, July, August, September). This is data at the level of the European Union. According to the numbers Adriatic Croatia alone counted for more overnight stays than some entire tourist countries.
In 2022, in August alone, this most popular tourist region in Europe counted more than 7.5 million overnight tourist stays via the aforementioned booking platforms. The French region that includes the Azure Coast with Provence followed with 4.7 million overnight stays.
The Azure Coast was at a great advantage in the month of May, though. Adriatic Croatia, or even the entire country, were not among the 20 most popular tourist destinations. By the way, the top 10 regions with the most significant increase in the number of overnight stays included nine French wine regions.
