Bruno Trapan Presents Istraditional: What Next?

Bruno, how much longer will your surprise us with new labels, I demanded of Bruno Trapan upon seeing he is promoting a new wine – Istraditional, probably his most complex, if not the most exciting wine in a brief, but surely respectable wine career.

“Each year I say it’s enough, but then I forge something new. Maybe all that remains is to mix Malvazija and Teran or make a white wine from Teran,” answered Bruno.

Personally, Istraditional is the best Christmas gift I have received and recommend it to any true wine lover, especially admirers of the third, orange colour becoming more popular in the region. However, Bruno corrected me and said his Istraditional is “not an orange, but an amber wine,” in line with the most anticipated book in the wine world. It is the work of Simon Woolf, “Amber Revolution,” announced in the summer of 2018.

I barely managed to finish my thought, Bruno felt right off he needs to emphasise that Istraditional “is a story very similar to Uroboros, but not an orange or – an oxidised wine!”

“It’s a Malvazija macerated for 9 days without temperature control, just as our grandfathers used to do,” explained Bruno again.

Even without saying anything, the label with the title Istraditional says it all. A Malvazija made in the traditional way, the way Bruno’s grandfather did. For those more into music, the name Istraditional unavoidably associates of the Bruno Krajcar album, famed Istrian composer, for which he received countless awards. In the foreword of the Istraditional album, Bruno Krajcar pointed out “Istria cherishes a special type of music mostly seen in its lack of range (the space between two neighbouring tones is less than half a degree). Due to this, the Istrian indigenous musical expression is characterised by exceptional archaism.

“Bruno Krajcar is a great friend of mine. He wanted to name my The One wine as Istraditional, but it did not suit me then. Then for months he was on my case for not honouring any of my wines with one of his songs. When this Malvazija came to me, I called my wife Andrea and said the name of the wine could be – Istraditional. She agreed – and that’s that,” concluded Bruno.

However, Bruno Krajcar has a wonderful song, Istrael, in which the text mentions “turning water into wine,” but those verses by Krajcar are far from Trapan’s wine reality…
