Brodosplit Shipyard Starts the Construction of Four Container Ships

Total Croatia News

Work commences on another big order for Split’s shipyard.

In the Split Shipbuilding Industry, workers on the machine for cutting sheet metal began processing steel for ships no. 476, 477, 478 and 479, announced the Split shipyard in a statement. These projects belong to a series of container ships for its own fleet, which is in accordance with the restructuring program and together with motor yachts and sailboats will further expand the company’s fleet, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on November 12, 2015.

The ships will be 184.43 metres in length, 27.5 metres in width and 15.80 metres in height. Their individual capacity with a draft of 10.30 metres will be 24,000 tons, and they will be able to carry 2000 TEUs (containers of 6.1 meters in length). The speed of 18 knots will be achieved thanks to 11,060 kW engines.

The special feature of the ships will be the fact that the fuel will be LNG (liquefied natural gas), which is the cleanest and the most environmentally friendly fossil fuel. This is especially important because the container ships with LNG as fuel will be more and more attractive in the global shipping market as a result of new national and international regulations that will prescribe the permissible amounts of emissions, which are being gradually introduced in certain areas (first in the USA and in the Baltic Sea).

Extremely important part of this project is the fact that LNG engines, as well as the extra “dual fuel” engines, will be manufactured in Brodosplit-Diesel Engine Factory, under a license from MAN, and that the special tanks for LNG fuel will also be produced at Brodosplit. “The construction of these ships will enable the Split Shipbuilding Industry and Brodosplit Plovidba to enter the shipbuilding market niche that will enable sustainable business for the Split shipyard, higher engagement of its capacities and the acquisition of references for the construction of ships which will soon be more in demand”, Tomislav Debeljak, general manager of Brodosplit, said.
