Croatia’s Exports Rise by More Than 14%, Imports by 11%

Croatia’s most important trading partners are still members of the European Union.

In the first six months of this year, Croatian exports of goods rose by 14.5% compared to the same period last year, while imports increased by 11.2%, according to data published on Thursday by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), reports Poslovni.hr on September 7, 2017.

The CBS has thus corrected its first estimates, according to which exports increased by 13.9% and imports by 10.1% in the first six months. According to new data, in the first six months of this year, Croatia exported goods worth HRK 49.9 billion and imported goods worth HRK 80.6 billion. Foreign trade shortages amounted to HRK 30.7 billion in that period, while import coverage by export was 61.9%, 0.2 percentage points more than in the first five months of this year.

Croatia’s most important trading partners are still members of the European Union. Exports to these countries amounted to 32.4 billion kunas in the first six months of this year, which is 10% more than a year ago, while imports rose 8.9% to 62.8 billion kunas. Croatia mostly conducts trade with Germany, Italy and Slovenia.

Exports to CEFTA countries, totalled HRK 8,4 billion in the first six months which is 20.3% more than in the same period last year, while imports from these countries rose by 18.6%, valued at HRK 4, 8 billion.

When taking into consideration exports and imports according to the type of business activities, the largest growth in exports was generated in the production of refined petroleum products – by 74% valued at HRK 3.2 billion, while the pharmaceutical industry’s exports grew by 39%, to 4.1 billion kunas.The most significant growth in imports, however, was recorded in the mining and quarrying activities by 52% to HRK 5.1 billion.

Expressed in euros, Croatian exports of goods grew by 16.1 percent to EUR 6.7 billion in the first six months of 2017, while imports rose by 12.7 percent to EUR 10.8 billion.
