The 24 schools will receive all the fruit and vegetables their students can eat in a academic year.
In May this year, a competition for primary schools in Croatia was organised in which the main prize was free fruits and vegetables for their students for the whole academic year. The 24 schools which won the competition have become “Kaufland ViP Schools”, with “ViP” standing in for “fruits and vegetables” in Croatian, reports Poslovni.hr on September 21, 2017.
The first donations were delivered last week, and even the schools which did not win the competition have not been left empty-handed. Kaufland wanted to reward all the hard-working, creative students, so all the schools which took part were given baskets full of fresh fruit and vegetables.
The company decided to provide a sufficient amount of fruit and vegetables once a week for every pupil, which is a total of 2.5 tons per week, or over 85 tons of fresh fruit and vegetables annually.
“As a socially responsible company, we strongly advocate for the health of children in Croatia. According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, the obesity of children is one of the most serious health problems of the 21st century. Therefore, we want to use this project to provide children with a healthy selection of foods, and we want to help them be more interested in healthy eating, especially for diverse food. Therefore, we have created an annual fruit and vegetable plan which is different from one week to the next and includes, among other things, grapes, nectarines, apples, pears, bananas, kiwis, as well as cucumbers, tomatoes, kale, lettuce, cauliflower, carrots and fresh green salad. Out of the total amount of donated foodstuffs, more than 60 percent of fruits and vegetables will be produced on Croatian farms,” announced the company.
