Food Outlets in Croatia Offer Cheaper Alternatives for Some Buyers

Total Croatia News

A cheaper food shopping option in Croatia.

“Some of our customers come every day to see whether we have some new products or whether some of the products have been discounted even more”, says Gordana Obajdin from the Atlantic Group shop at the Trešnjevka market in Zagreb which sells food products which are near their expiration date. “The products are sold at a discount of 30 percent or even more, depending on their expiration date. As expiration date get closer, products get cheaper and cheaper. For example, with less than two days before the expiration date, the discounts can go up to 90 percent”, Gordana adds, reports 24Sata on December 13, 2015.

It is not a store to which you can go to buy a specific product, since the offer is constantly changing. “There are always new products coming in and everyone can find something for themselves. The most popular products are Raffaello and Ferrero Rocher, when we have them”, Gordana concludes.

Customers can also buy cleaning products, such as various types of Domestos, cosmetics, body hygiene products, toothbrushes, various creams, lipstick, food, soups, pastries and lots of sweets. Some of the more frequent customers are students from nearby primary and secondary schools who come in between their classes to get something cheap to eat or drink. “I come to check what is on offer. This summer, you could buy three litres of natural apple juice for just nine kuna, while Kinder packages were discounted by 90 percent and cost about two kuna. This is a place where we can afford those sweets which are otherwise too expensive for us”, one of the students said.

Products at affordable prices are available in some other shops as well, such as those which are owned by individual factories and companies. For example, in Kandit’s stores in Zagreb and Osijek, it is sometimes possible to purchase ‘defective’ products. These products are perfectly safe to eat, however, due to mistakes made during the production process, their external appearance makes them inadequate to be sold in regular shops. Kraš is also among those producers which own similar stores.
