Long-Delayed Construction of Čiovo Bridge to Continue

New contractors have been selected to build the bridge between the island of Čiovo and the mainland.

Croatian Roads (HC) public company has selected a joint bid of Split Road Company and Strabag for the construction of the bridge between the island of Čiovo and the mainland. The estimated value of the project is 95 million kunas without VAT, confirmed Croatian Roads on Wednesday, reports tportal.hr on October 11, 2017.

At the end of August, HC received two bids for the continuation of the construction of the bridge – one from Split Road Company and Strabag worth 119.8 million kunas, and the other from Pomgrad, Zagreb Montaža and Đuro Đaković Group worth 113.5 million kunas. HC has ultimately chosen the Split bid after it assessed it as being more favourable. Although the proposal is more expensive than the estimated value of the project, Croatian Roads has confirmed that it will secure the necessary funds.

The construction of the bridge to the island of Čiovo, which will be 547 metres long and cost in total about 207 million kunas, is one of the projects financed from the European funds, in the amount of 176.7 million kunas, or 85 percent. The works contracted to Split Road Company and Strabag include the second phase of the construction, together with access and connecting roads.

At the end of March this year, Croatian Roads terminated a contract with the Vijadukt company on the construction of the Čiovo Bridge because of the delays and problems that the construction company from Zagreb had. It was decided to launch a new procurement process, inviting all the relevant contractors that could conclude the project in the shortest possible timeframe.

At that time, HC announced that 57 percent of the works on the project had been completed and that, after the selection of the new contractor, they would start working at full capacity in order to conclude the project as soon as possible.

Due to the great traffic importance of the bridge for Trogir, its surroundings and Dalmatia in general, the bridge should be operational by the beginning of the 2018 tourist season, and the completion of its construction is scheduled for mid-June.
