Number of Unemployed Expected to Fall Below 150,000

Lauren Simmonds

Summer always brings a promising fall in unemployment figures, and despite the vast majority of data being temporary, it looks as if things may be improving.

According to a report by DuList on the 16th of June, 2017, the number of unemployed persons in Croatia has decreased by 72 thousand in the last four months, and this trend is expected to continue.

Employers have announced 20,000 vacancies, and as there are 172,000 unemployed persons officially registered on the unemployment register, it is quite possible that by the end of summer, the number of unemployed will fall below 150,000.

At the height of the economic crisis at the turn of the century in the year 2000, Croatia was home to about 100,000 unemployed people without the experience of single working day under their belts. As the general number of younger people continues to fall, which is obviously a worrying statistic in itself, businesses have to turn to older individuals and drastically change their attitude towards existing workers if they want to keep them in their positions.

Not so coincidentally, the fall in the numbers of unemployed persons is close to the number of new pension insurers, the number of which, by the end of May 2017, finally exceeded 1.5 million.
