This makes the product registered and protected on the joint EU market
The process of protecting the label “Krk Olive Oil” began in January of 2014, when the Krk olive producer association Drobnica submitted their request to the Agriculture Ministry. The label was protected in Croatia from April 2015 and sent to procedure to the European Commission, where it is now part of the register of protected labels of authenticity and geographical origin, Poslovni Dnevnik reported on July 6, 2016.
The production takes place exclusively on Krk island and smaller island within administrative limits. It is an extra virgin olive oil produced directly from olives with exclusively mechanical procedures from authentic Krk olive sorts: Debela, Naška, Roušlja and Slatka, which need to make up at least 80% of the content.
Krk is the northernmost island and the effects of the continent on the climate of the Mediterranean area is strongest here, while it is known that olives grown in such areas have a high content of oleic acid and antioxidant protecting the Krk olive oil from deterioration and providing freshness and aroma. During the winter low temperatures, even snow at times, with high temperatures in summertime, drought and rough terrain create biological stress to which the olive responds by creating secondary metabolites-antioxidants, high value components which are specific to the Krk olive oil.
The spiciness and bitterness are positive qualities of the oil, a result of the high content of antioxidants they contain, with antioxidant properties protecting from deterioration due to oxidation.
The mutual interaction of local nature factors, authentic sorts, human factor and olive growing tradition has resulted in the product labelled Krk olive oil, whose qualities are unique for the entire island.
