Striking Uljanik Workers Again Protest in Pula

Total Croatia News

ZAGREB, August 29, 2018 – The workers of the Uljanik shipyard marched down the streets of Pula again on Wednesday, the sixth day of their strike over unpaid wages for July, joined by more and more citizens every day.

Many of them carried banners and shouted “We are the people of Pula, Uljanik is ours”, and demanded the immediate resignation of Uljanik’s entire management.

Some of the banners carried by the workers said “Uljanik dead, Pula dead,” “Giving a kidney for food for my children,” and “USKOK into Uljanik,” the last one referring to the USKOK anti-corruption office.

Deputy Mayor Robert Cvek addressed them, reiterating that it was in the town’s interest to keep jobs and sustainable shipbuilding and production.

Strike committee chairman Đino Šverko said there had been various governments but that none had allowed workers to stay hungry for so long. “Shame on them,” he said, demanding the immediate establishment of a guarantee fund.

After the protest march, the workers returned to the shipyard.
