Croatia to speed up important energy project.

Croatian First Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Karamarko met today in Zagreb with Amos J. Hochstein, the special envoy and coordinator for international energy issues at the US State Department, reports tportal.hr on March 2, 2016.

They exchanged views about the international position of Croatia, with a special emphasis on its strategic position on the energy map of the region and the European Union. The two sides agreed that the LNG terminal on the island of Krk is a project of mutual interest for both Croatia and the United States of America, said the Croatian government in a statement.

The government further announced that, due to the inefficiency of the previous government in making key decisions necessary for the construction of the LNG terminal, the First Deputy Prime Minister expressed his clear view that the new government will give highest priority to this important project. He noted that, at the very beginning of the project implementation, the government will pursue the idea of a floating LNG terminal, which will bring much lower costs and enable faster implementation of the whole project. Therefore, the terminal could become fully operational within two years, instead of five years as had been planned earlier.

The American representative promised the support of his government to Croatia regarding the construction of gas transportation system required for the integration of the LNG terminal on the island of Krk into the existing Croatian gas network.
