The Split shipyard will build another 22 steel dams.

Competing with three other bidders, Brodosplit has managed to win a project at the international tender for building another 22 steel dams for the last, fourth passage San Nicolo through the Venice lagoon. The contract between the company from Split and Construzioni Mose Arsenale involves the construction of all 63 dams, and the value of the deal amounts to 70 million euros, reports poslovni.hr on July 30, 2016.

In addition to the 15 dams that have already been built and tested, the first one that was made in Split has been delivered two months ago. Currently, the shipyard has 15 dams that are ready for delivery and they should be on their way in August, via a special barge. As for the other new mobile dams or gates, Brodosplit will keep shipping them every few months. The new contract brings to the shipyard about a year and a half of work. According to the owners of Brodosplit, DIV from Samobor, the construction of the dams for Venice, although not a standard type of order for the Split-based shipyard, represents a project that is technically and technologically more demanding than the construction of ships.

The gates will form an integrated system which consists of a series of mobile dams of 30×20 metres, which are 4-5 meters in height and weight from 320 to 380 tons. The fundamental goal of the project is to protect Venice from the Adriatic Sea when the tide passes the level of 110 centimetres. It can withstand the water level increase of up to 3 metres. The dam project for the Venice port also includes the Varaždin-based company Gumiimpex which builds rubber bumpers using the tools made at the Brodosplit Machining Company.

“In the next ten years, we want to see Brodosplit at the top of the list of the most respected European shipyards, and as a flagship of the Croatian economy”, said Tomislav Debeljak, CEO of Brodosplit, at the contract signing ceremony.
