September 11, 2023 – Croatian Caritas reported that it is starting a fundraising campaign to help the victims of the recent Morocco earthquake, writes Index.
“It is extremely important to show solidarity and closeness to those suffering because we felt the devastating power of the earthquake. We received a lot of help from the Caritas network in Europe and the world,” emphasized Croatian Caritas, which will forward all collected funds to Caritas in Morocco.
“Every donation will be welcome in helping and eliminating the consequences of the earthquake for the very vulnerable residents. The aid will first provide food, water, hygiene supplies, temporary shelter, and psychosocial assistance, and later rebuild homes and normalize the lives of the most vulnerable families. The aid we collect will express solidarity, compassion, and support for the victims in Morocco”, states Caritas.
Citizens and companies can donate by calling the Croatian Caritas donation phone number 060 9010 (EUR 0.83/6.25 HRK per call; VAT included) or by paying to the account IBAN: 23400091100080340 (call to number 109/23) – purpose of payment Potres Maroko.
Croatian Caritas also states that this morning, the team of diocesan Caritas Rabat met in Morocco and began coordinating emergency measures to help victims in cooperation with the international Caritas network. They are preparing packages with essential food items. The director of Diocesan Caritas Rabat visited the affected areas.
No Croats Harmed in the Morocco Earthquake
As for Croats who found themselves there during the Morocco earthquake, none were killed or seriously harmed. One person was injured, as reported by HRT. Krešo Glavač, the deputy ambassador in Morocco, spoke about the situation in the country and the tourists and students who were there at the time.
“They are all fine; one person has returned to Croatia, it seems that she has decided so, however, the others are continuing their tours. I also heard from Croats who are in Fes, 20 of them. They are also doing well. They will head to Casablanca and return to Croatia according to their schedule.
Most importantly, five Croatian students staying in Marrakech were in Casablanca during the earthquake. They came to report to the embassy, and we received them. They are all fine”, Glavač pointed out.
Speaking about the atmosphere in Morocco, he said that they have not yet requested international humanitarian aid there.
“They are trying to determine the situation on the ground; they are still searching for possible survivors under the ruins,” he said, adding that Croatia is ready to help.
