February the 3rd, 2025 – Brand new Croatian-made Zagreb trams are set to hit the capital’s streets soon. The new TMK 2400 vehicles will be the most modern in ZET’s fleet.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, new Croatian-made TMK 2400 Zagreb trams will soon be in operation thanks to a contract signed between ZET and Končar.

That contract was signed two years ago in June, and regarded 20 new low-floor trams set to be delivered two years later. The production dynamics were also agreed, and they prescribed four new vehicles being delivered every month. The project is worth almost 40 million euros excluding VAT, and the first round will mark two decades since the new trams last arrived on the capital city’s tracks, Večernji list reported.

Zagreb’s residents are already affectionately referring to the new Croatian-made Zagreb trams as “Blue Lightning”, and the trams currently operating on Zagreb’s tracks are the NT 2200 and 2300 models. The new models will be called the NT 2400 and will be the most modern vehicles in the entire fleet, from safety to traffic and technical innovations that Končar has developed in its facilities.

The biggest innovation will apparently be a revolution of sorts in Croatia and beyond it. That is that these new vehicles will be hybrid. That means that in addition to the current from the contact line, they will be powered by batteries, which will be charged with the energy generated during braking.

It’s a concept of regenerative braking that already exists in the automotive industry, but this is the first application of such a system in public transport. With lower consumption, this will mean that in the event of a power outage, the tram can continue running without interruption. It also means that the battery will also be charged up during acceleration when the consumption is the highest. All of that combined means that ZET should receive lower electricity bills.
