April the 23rd, 2024 – MUP (the Interior Ministry) has introduced yet more new high tech cameras along Croatian motorways. Here’s what they can film on and inside passing cars.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, MUP recently confirmed for N1 that they’re proceeding with the installation of the housing cases and devices they acquired back at the end of 2023.

This regards a total of 113 housing cases and 37 fixed radar devices. In the second half of this year, they plan to purchase and install another 24 such housing cases and 21 fixed radars. This means that traffic violations committed along Croatian motorways will soon be controlled by 175 fixed radars. They also invited people to suggest monitoring locations, clearly hinting at sections of the roadway that appear more prone to accidents and driving violations.

are mup’s new cameras effective? a look back at 2022 and 2023

MUP revealed to N1 that back in 2022, 250,192 speeding violations were detected along Croatian motorways, while in 2023, a slight increase of 263,058 such violations were detected.

That same state institution also revealed that the most speeding offences were recorded with the help of surveillance cameras under the authority of the Dubrovnik-Neretva Police Department, the Zadar Police Department and the Split-Dalmatia Police Department. That means that (rather unsurprisingly), a lot of the fast and furious driving took place in Dalmatia.

N1 asked MUP whether these surveillance cameras can also record other traffic violations aside from speeding offences.

“If it’s a high-quality photo taken of a violation, fixed devices for measuring the speed of the vehicle can also be used to determine violations such as illegal overtaking, using a mobile phone, and not using a seat belt while driving,” MUP responded.

In other words, they don’t only use these new and rather sensitive surveillance cameras placed along Croatian motorways to catch speeding drivers, they can be used to record a wide array of other violations as well.
