croatian road 6 lanes

August the 20th, 2025 – One extremely busy Croatian road section might be set to expand to 6 lanes to help relieve traffic, particularly during the busy summer months.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Croatian Roads (Hrvatske ceste) recently launched a public procurement for the preparation of an analysis of the expansion of the D8 state road through Kaštela. The desire is to see this busy Croatian road section alter from its current 4 to 6 lanes. The move should solve traffic congestion on one of the busiest sections in the entire country, which sees over 54,000 vehicles per day, according to portal.hr.

The tender worth 60,000 euros was announced this week, and interested bidders have until September the 9th to submit their bids. The selected consultant will then be given four months to fully prepare a comprehensive analysis that will include a traffic study, a preliminary construction solution and the creation of an advanced BIM 3D model. That analysis must also include an engineering-geological survey of the entire area’s terrain, geodetic bases and an assessment of the impact on the existing municipal infrastructure. The innovative part of the project is the obligation to create a BIM 3D model that will provide a better insight into the planned solutions and easier communication with the general public.

The model must show the existing condition of the terrain and the designed route for this busy Croatian road section with its 6 traffic lanes. It also needs to include important structures such as overpasses, underpasses and bridges. The final analysis will include an assessment of all alternative solutions, taking into account spatial, traffic, construction-technical, financial and environmental parameters. The documentation must also be prepared for presentation to Split-Dalmatia County.

The D8 state road on the 17.5-kilometre section from Plan to Širin in Solin is the second busiest section on the state road network in Croatia. The analysis will cover three key sections, with each requiring a specific approach due to different spatial constraints and technical challenges.
