January the 6th, 2024 – The Croatian Sunday work ban has been a controversial topic and a constant thorn in the side of those in the trade sector for a long time now. Split has found a way to circumvent it.

Opinion across the board has been divided when it comes to the infamous Croatian Sunday work ban which placed strict limitations on the trade sector and its ability to continue to operate on Sundays. The rules first began being applied last year, and this year things are set to ramp up. Fair days, however, are always an option – and the City of Split has taken that option and ran with it.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the Mayor of Split, Ivica Puljak, has now officially declared all Sundays and holidays throughout the entire duration of 2024 to be “fair days”. The City of Split’s administration reported this on Friday, much to the relief of the vast majority working in the trade sector in Dalmatia’s largest city.

By the conclusion of Mayor Ivica Puljak, fair days have been declared for all holidays and all Sundays in the City of Split, starting from today (Saturday, January the 6th, 2024).

“This decision enables artisans to continue to remain open and work at a time when many activities generate most of their traffic, which is currently not permitted by the Law on Trade,” reads the announcement recently posted on the official Facebook page of the City of Split.

On the declared days, occasional sales at kiosks and stands as part of the fair’s events can take place from 08:00 a.m. to 00:00 according to the mayor’s conclusion.

It’s worth noting that the City of Split in particular has been vocal about the controversial Croatian Sunday work ban, and appears to have always been forward in putting the economic interests of the trade sector first.
